マルティン・ルターが生きた当時のキリスト教会は、「本当のキリスト教会」ではありませんでした。聖書にある真の神の言葉を土台とするのではなく、人間の権威と言葉と私的な解釈によって教会は支配され、教えられていました。人間の思い付きが、まるで神のメッセージであるかのように人々に教えられていた時代でした。聖書にある神の本当の教えに気がついた人もいましたが、迫害され、「異端」として処刑されるような時代です。

The Christian Church at the time Martin Luther lived was not the “true Christian Church”. Instead of being based on the true Word of God found in the Bible, the church was ruled and taught by the authority, words, and private interpretations of men. It was a time when man's ideas were taught to people as if they were God's message. It was a time when some people realized the true teachings of God in the Bible, but they were persecuted and executed as "heretics.

聖書の真の教えに気がついたルターをはじめとする何人かの神学者たちは、キリスト教会を元（聖書）に戻そうとしました。それが宗教改革であり、ルーテル教会の始まります。ルーテル教会とはルターを信奉する人々の集まりではありません。ルターが聖書から直接教えたように、神の恵みと信仰とイエス・キリストのみによって与えられる永遠のいのちと神の祝福の約束に信頼している人たちのことです。ルター派の人々は、聖書の神の言葉が曲げられたり、人の教えによって変えられたりすることを受け入れません。

Some theologians, including Luther, who realized the true teachings of the Bible, tried to restore the Christian church to its original (biblical) state. This was the Reformation and the beginning of the Lutheran Church. The Lutheran Church is not a group of Lutheran followers. It is those who, as Luther taught directly from the Bible, trust in God's grace, faith, and promise of eternal life and divine blessings that come only through Jesus Christ. Lutherans do not accept that the Word of God in the Bible can be perverted or changed by the teachings of men.
